  13. 1) The key challenges facing the PNG community is that 85% of them live rural or remote areas PNG. Government has not been able to pay for the necessary maintenance for local roads and port infrastructure. The biggest ports, in Port Moresby and Lae, are deteriorating. Only 12 of the PNG’s 22 airports are certified to the lowest standard. There is a lack of skilled workers such as project managers and engineers. The Liquefied Natural Gas Project will add to these challenges by creating considerable stress to the existing workforce and infrastructure.
    2) AusAID and its partners are working to address these problems with a Transport infrastructure schedule.
    3) As a result of this intervention 2040 KMs of national priority roads maintained in 2009, 340km of the Highlands Highway maintained, Girua airport tarmac fixed, Master plan developed for the upgrade of Jackson Airport, Bougainville trunk road maintained, International and domestic terminals in Port Moresby upgraded, Computer-based air traffic control training simulator to share international flight information put in, Air services Limited supported to give training to air traffic controllers, including ‘train the trainer’ courses for PNG air traffic controllers in Melbourne.
